I.     BASICS

  • THIS RACE UTILIZES THE SCORE-O FORMAT
  • A TEAM CONSISTS OF A MINIMUM OF 2 AND NO MORE THAN 3 CADETS (SEE TEAM SECTION BELOW)
  • UNITS CAN ENTER AS MANY TEAMS AS THEY WOULD LIKE
  • ALL TEAMS WILL PLAN THEIR OWN ROUTE TO LOCATE ANY CONTROLS IN ANY ORDER
  • EACH CONTROL IS WORTH A DIFFERENT AMOUNT OF POINTS
  • THE GOAL IS TO GATHER AS MANY POINTS AS POSSIBLE IN THE 2.5 HOUR TIME LIMIT
  • THE TEAM WITH THE MOST POINTS IN THE FASTEST TIME IS THE WINNER
  • TEAMS ARRIVING AFTER THE 2.5 HOUR DEADLINE WILL FORFIT 40 POINTS PER MINUTE LATE
  • GOVERNOR THOMAS JOHNSON ORIENTEERING TEAM MEMBERS WILL NOT COMPETE FOR AWARDS

II.    CONTROL MARKERS

  • 0730:  RACE CHECK-IN / REGISTRATION
  • 0845:  NOVICE TRAINING
  • 0900:  SAFETY BRIEF
  • 0910:  ROUTE PLANNING
  • 0930:  RACE START
  • 1200:  RACE FINISH 
  • 1230:  AWARDS PRESENTATION
     A.  RACE CHECK-IN / REGISTRATION
  • ALL VEHICLES SHOULD ARRIVE THROUGH THE LITTLE BENNETT CAMPGROUND GATE WHERE THEY WILL BE DIRECTED BY TJ CADETS TO AVAILABLE PARKING.  
  • PLEASE DO NOT ARRIVE BEFORE 0730 AS WE WILL BE STAGING FOR THE EVENT.   
  • REGISTRATION WILL TAKE PLACE INSIDE OF THE HAWK'S CREEK NATURE CENTER.
     B.  NOVICE TRAINING
  • GTJ ORIENTEERING TEAM CADETS WILL PROVIDE BASIC INSTRUCTION AND STRATEGY GUIDANCE TO NOVICE ORIENTEERS
  • TRAINING WILL INCLUDE MAP ORIENTATION, BASIC COMPASS USE, AND SCORE-O STRATEGY
  • TRAINING WILL BEGIN PROMPTLY AT 0845 AT THE AMPHITHEATER
     C.  SAFETY BRIEF
  • ATTENDING THE SAFETY BRIEF IS MANDATORY
  • TOPICS COVERED WILL INCLUDE DANGEROUS WILDLIFE, PLANTLIKE, 
  • TJ ORIENTEERING TEAM CADETS WILL PROVIDE BASIC INSTRUCTION AND STRATEGY GUIDANCE TO NOVICE ORIENTEERS
  • TRAINING WILL INCLUDE MAP ORIENTATION, BASIC COMPASS USE, AND SCORE-O STRATEGY
  • TRAINING WILL BEGIN PROMPTLY AT 0845 AT THE AMPHITHEATER
      D.  ROUTE PLANNING
  • ALL TEAMS WILL HAVE AT LEAST 15 MINUTES TO VIEW THE RACE MAP AND PLAN THEIR ROUTES
  • UNITS MAY COMBINE TEAMS DURING THE PLANNING PERIOD
  • HIGHLIGHTERS ARE RECOMMENDED TO IDENTIFY HIGH POINT CONTROLS AND IDEAL PATH
      E.  RACE START
  • ALL TEAMS WILL HAVE AT LEAST 15 MINUTES TO VIEW THE RACE MAP AND PLAN THEIR ROUTES
  • UNITS MAY COMBINE TEAMS DURING THE PLANNING PERIOD
  • HIGHLIGHTERS ARE RECOMMENDED TO IDENTIFY HIGH POINT CONTROLS AND IDEAL PATH
      F.  RACE FINISH
